“It was an unforgettable trip. The car took us through central London, one of the toughest cities in terms of driving conditions,” he said.
According to Gates, “being in a car was a bit surreal” and not driving by yourself while the car was dodging other cars. The businessman explained that while unmanned vehicles are still under development, he has a driver with him for insurance, just in case.
“We are now near a tipping point where, under certain conditions, cars are becoming available that allow the driver to take their hands off the wheel and give control to the system. Over the next decade, we will start to see more vehicles cross that threshold,” Gates said.
The businessman noted that he has always loved to drive, but looks forward to the moment when he can transfer control of the car to artificial intelligence. “When this happens, drones will change transportation as dramatically as computers change office jobs,” the philanthropist said.
