Russian developers from the NTI Competence Center “Trusted Interaction Technologies” have discovered a technique that guarantees complete depersonalization of users’ personal data. Ruslan Permyakov, Deputy Central Director of the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR), told socialbites.ca about this.

According to him, a special mathematical model is used to evaluate data quality for depersonalization. “It explains the boundary conditions for the developer to preserve the value of the data and assesses the risk of redefinition,” the expert said.

Permyakov explained that when using the model, the data doesn’t become “too impersonal”, but still loses connection with a particular person. With this model, developers choose parameters to coarsen the data so that it may belong to several people.

“Usually, in the process of desensitization, personal data either becomes too general or it remains possible to link them to a specific person. In the first case, the data has little value to the developer using it. In the latter, there is a risk of personal information being leaked,” explained the deputy director of the Competence Center.

According to Permyakov, this makes it impossible to associate information with a particular person. “Thanks to the development, we will be able to create a service that will create a dataset (database – socialbites.ca) according to the specified parameters.”
