In 2023, the increase in the number of personal data leaks in Russia may be 50-150% compared to last year. This was reported to socialbites.ca by Evgeny Tsarev, director of RTM Group, a company specializing in cybersecurity. According to him, a significant increase in such incidents is observed in the first quarter of 2023.

“We attribute this trend to a sharp and massive transition of enterprises to native software, an increase in the number of in-house developments, as well as logistical disruptions and general obsolescence of the existing fleet of IT equipment,” Tsarev said.

According to him, 90% of the leaks the company investigated in 2023 resulted from violations of standard security management mechanisms. This refers to errors during the installation and use of new software and non-standard equipment. The use of open source software with vulnerabilities also contributes.

“Three years ago, breaches of standard security mechanisms accounted for about 40% of leaks. Two years ago – already more than 55%, a year ago (in the 1st quarter of 2022) – about 80%, ”says the expert, quoting a comparison.

According to Tsarev, it will take several more years to research and test new developments. All this time the risk of new large-scale leaks will be high. The expert believes that companies’ investments in IT departments and especially in testing new software will help to improve the situation.
