Apple CEO Tim Cook has backed COO Jeff Williams in his quest to launch the company’s first VR headset in 2023, despite the development team’s warning that the product is not ready. In this respect informs MacRumors cites a recent investigation by the Financial Times (FT).

According to the FT, the discussion of the VR helmet’s exit window has caused serious disagreements among Apple divisions. For example, Apple’s industrial design team insists that the current headphone form factor isn’t ready for the mass market. Designers and engineers believe we’ll have to wait a few more years until it’s possible to fit a headset into a lightweight body and make it mainstream.

In contrast, the business division, on the contrary, insists on an early launch of the product. They believe it is important for Apple to enter the VR technology market as soon as possible, even if it hurts the popularity of the innovation. It is assumed that the functions of a VR cinema, interactive exercises and the ability to make FaceTime calls using 3D avatars will be sufficient for the relative success of the innovation.

Tim Cook, as a former chief operating officer, supported new general manager Jeff Williams. Therefore, according to former Apple engineers, the developers of the VR headset faced a lot of pressure due to the deadline.

Former Apple employees said that while Jony Ive (left Apple in 2019 – ed.) heads the design division, engineers have the final say in the launch of new products. In recent years, this paradigm has been changing rapidly – the profit planning department under Cook’s auspices is taking the reins of government into its own hands.
