HP started remotely uploading firmware to its printers and then stopped working with cheap non-genuine cartridges. In this respect informs Edition of ArsTechnica.
So far, it is stated that the problem is only related to inkjet models. The Internet, in particular, is littered with complaints from owners of the OfficeJet 7740, OfficeJet Pro 6970, and OfficeJet 6978. In some cases, HP prohibits working with non-genuine products on discontinued printers.
The new firmware enables control of the so-called dynamic security chip in cartridges in printers. HP has been using this IP protection feature since 2016. As a rule, cartridges without a special chip are much cheaper.
ArsTechnica writes that this is the first time HP has carried out such a “raid” in the aforementioned 2016. After blocking cartridges at the time, the company faced a series of class action lawsuits in several countries. In the United States, Australia and Italy, the manufacturer had to pay several million dollars in compensation to affected customers.
