Huawei introduced new server motherboards at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 technology fair, where the names of all chips are covered with black tape. In this respect informs Edition of Tom’s Hardware citing photos released by attendees at MWC in Barcelona.
It was noted that Huawei decided not to establish its partners in Barcelona in this way. The fact is that due to US sanctions, a Chinese company cannot use chips made using American technology. But Huawei still buys them from the gray market and uses them in telecommunication equipment. Huawei is officially breaking this ban by sealing the names of silicon components, while also insuring its customers who could be penalized by the US for partnering with Huawei.

Tom’s Hardware believes that not all duct tape-covered chips are Western. Some are made by Chinese company SMIC. However, they also cannot be disclosed due to the possibility of violating any US requirements.
