Avast’s information security experts have found modifications for the Dota 2 game on Steam that hide a dangerous virus. Portal reports Sleep Computer.
Avast Threat Labs experts found a total of four malicious modifications containing malware. It was used to execute arbitrary system commands.
“This backdoor allows execution of any JavaScript code received over HTTP, giving an attacker the ability to both hide and modify the exploit code at will,” said Avast expert Jan Vojtešek.
The attacks were carried out using the CVE-2021-38003 vulnerability, which was patched in October 2021. However, users who rarely update their computers may still be infected by the virus.
It is known that Dota 2 developer Valve was notified of the danger, and after that, the virus-containing changes in the game were removed from Steam. Nearly 200 players are reportedly affected by the malware’s actions.
