As part of its carbon negative strategy, Microsoft has added Shutdown Mode, which uses up to 20x less power to Xbox Series X and S consoles. This was reported by the DTF publication.

It is noted that the shutdown can be activated manually on consoles. Later, Microsoft plans to make it the default mode of operation.

Shutdown is an analogue of the “sleep” mode, which is characterized by a significant reduction in power consumption. Savings are achieved through special mechanisms for downloading and installing updates in the background.

Microsoft claims that using the new feature on two consoles within a year can reduce the amount of carbon emissions comparable to the amount it takes 10 years for a tree to process.

Starting January 12, 2023, Microsoft will start enabling Shutdown mode on consoles by default. Beta testers will be the first to notice the change. The IT giant will expand the new app to cover all users in the future. Microsoft also said it’s working to bring the feature to the Xbox One series console.
