Two US citizens, Daniel Abaev and Peter Leiman, were arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Russian hackers to hack the taxi service at John F. Kennedy International Airport. It has been reported Sleep Computer.
According to the researchers, Americans hacked the New York Airport taxi dispatch service system between September 2019 and September 2021, using malware from Russian hackers.
The system provides the distribution of the taxi fleet from the airport parking lot to orders in different terminals. Usually, drivers had to wait several hours before completing the next order.
But, according to the US Department of Justice, Abaev and Leiman offered to pay them $10, and drivers were able to receive the next order immediately after the previous one.
Taxi drivers participating in the program had to pay in cash or via mobile payment. According to the agency, communication between the taxi drivers and the defendants took place through closed group chats on instant messaging programs. Abaev and Leiman face up to 10 years in prison.
