Mortal Kombat is already impossible to imagine without fatalities, but initially they might not have existed at all. Ed Boon talked about how finishing moves came about during an interview celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

in the first instance Mortal Kombat’s fatal outcome was only the final boss Shang Tsung, who grabbed his sword and chopped off the enemy’s head. According to Boon, the developers copied a technique from an old fighting game barbarian.

In the end, the last hit was taken out of the game, but the team thought to make a fatality for other heroes. First in line was Johnny Cage: the hero learned to do an uppercut that sent the enemy’s head in the air. When the entire studio saw this, opinions about fatalities were divided. One side screamed it was too violent for a video game, while the other side was ecstatic.

Keep in mind that Ed Boon is now working with NetherRealm Studios on a new fighting game – it’s not clear which universe yet. The announcement could come in December during The Game Awards 2022. The release of Overwatch 2 breathed new life into the series’ porn – D.Va reached the tops of PornHub in the US
