Kitana is the princess of Edenia and the natural daughter of Sindel. She debuted in 1993 and has appeared in almost every game in the series since then. In this article, we will tell the modern history of Kitana and show the most notable cosplay works of her image.
Who is Kitana?
Kitana first appeared in Mortal Kombat 2. She was mostly remembered by the players for her bright appearance and unusual weapons. During battles, the princess of Edenia relies on fans with sharp blades, which are used in close and long-range combat. And thanks to them, the girl can throw the enemy in the air, after which the opportunity opens up for dealing a powerful blow.
In all parts of the Mortal Kombat series, Kitana prefers blue clothing. It can be an open suit that looks more like underwear, or a full-fledged light armor. In this article you can see how the princess outfits have changed in the latest games in the series.

In a nutshell on the chronology of the Mortal Kombat series
Before moving on to Kitana’s own story, let me focus on the chronology of events in Mortal Kombat. In 2011, the series was rebooted and all early games’ events were cancelled. Here we will tell the story of Kitana in the context of the new chronology. It is she who is now considered canon and will certainly be continued in Mortal Kombat 12.

Kitana in Mortal Kombat (2011). Betrayed daughter of Shao Kahn
Story campaign restart begins with preparations for the tournament. Outworld Emperor Shao Kahn wants to take advantage of the situation to attack Earthrealm. His daughter Kitana joins the competition with her boyfriend Jade. The princess loses the battle with Liu Kang, but the Shaolin monk unexpectedly leaves her alive. Thunder God Raiden saw the doubt in the girl’s eyes and suggested she go to the Flesh Pits, an eerie magical laboratory where Shang Tsung experimented with living things. There she saw Milina for the first time.
It turned out that Kitana was not Shao Kahn’s, but the adopted daughter, who failed to live up to his hopes, as she turned out to be too gentle. Therefore, Shang Tsung created Milina, in which flows the blood of a lovely Edenian and a ruthless Tarkadan. It is she who is to become the emperor’s new daughter and lead his armies into battle. And Kitana herself was waiting for execution.

She was saved from certain death by her friend Jade. She took care of the princess and, if necessary, had to kill the girl. But instead, Jade turned to Earthrealm’s warriors for help. During the invasion of the Outworld armies, Kitana ended up in the Sky Temple. There she met her mother Sindel, who was resurrected and strengthened by the soul of Shang Tsung. The Queen of Edenia single-handedly killed nearly all of Earthrealm’s defenders, including Kitana and Jade.
But the girls did not die. They were resurrected as zombies by the necromancer Quan Chi, here called revenants. They have retained their powers, but have ceased to think independently and now obey their master unconditionally.

Kitana in Mortal Kombat X. Lady of the Underworld
After the death of Shao Kahn, many of his warriors sided with the fallen god Shinnok, the ruler of the underworld. Among them was Kitana. Along with other revenants, she twice attacked the Celestial Temple and attempted to take over the Jinsei, Earthrealm’s main power source. However, with a concerted effort, Raiden’s allies thwarted Shinnok’s plans and killed him. And Quan Chi fell at the hands of the Scorpio.
After the death of the necromancer, the revenants were no longer puppets in the wrong hands. However, they remained on the side of evil. Kitana herself, along with Liu Kang, led the underworld. At the end of the story campaign, Raiden comes over to show Shinnok’s severed head and warn of new attacks on Earth.

Kitana in Mortal Kombat 11. Outworld Empress
The murder of Shinnok drew the ire of his sister Kronika. She decided to restart the timeline and make Raiden disappear forever. Revenant Kitana and Liu Kang liked her idea and agreed to help her. However, as a result of these actions, two timelines were created and many characters saw their young doppelgängers. Among them was young Kitana, who had not yet become a revenant.
The return of Shao Kahn has sparked another battle for the throne of the ruler of Outworld. This time, Kitana decided not to stay in the shadows. She personally defeated her adoptive father and became the new empress.

Her story continued in a story add-on aftermath. Sindel, who returned alive and unharmed, decided her daughter was unworthy of her title. The Queen of Edenia restored Shao Kahn to power. Together they killed both Kitana and her friend Jade. However, after the last fight between Shang Tsung and Liu Kang, the timeline was rewritten again, so we are waiting for the return of the princess in Mortal Kombat 12.
