In an interview with Collider, series creator Dan Erickson explained how he came up with the idea to invite Keanu Reeves to the set. In the first episode of the second season, the main characters are shown a corporate video “Lumon Listens”, in which the Lumon corporate building tells the events of the first season in its own way. To make a character likable, you had to find someone with warmth in his voice:
All I can say is that we considered several candidates for this role. We always wanted it to be someone that people would associate with, but who would also be very friendly. The Lumon building is very friendly in the context of this video, and there is a softness and warmth in its voice.
That’s why Keanu Reeves was the ideal candidate. The choice is made even better by the fact that the actor has already established himself in the world of voice acting thanks to his roles as Shadow in Sonic 3 The Movie and Johnny Silverhand.
