During The Game Awards 2024 it was Game of the Year Astrobot. Not all players agreed with the winner’s choice, but some went too far in expressing their dissatisfaction.
Traditionally, the main prize is awarded by the winner of the last The Game Awards, so this year the head of Larian Studios Swen Vincke was invited on stage. Let us remind you that this is the case Baldur’s Gate 3 earned no fewer than five statuettes in the ‘Game of the Year’ category in 2023 at leading ceremonies such as the same TGA and Golden Joystick Awards. Since it was Sven Vincke who opened the envelope with the winner of The Game Awards 2024, players reviewed Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam.
Within a day, the game already received more than 470 negative reviews with quite interesting comments, the authors of which immediately write that the reason was Astro Bot, which won the “Game of the Year”. However, in one of the reviews the situation was explained a little – it seems that gamers misunderstood Sven Vincke’s speech before the winner was announced:
The Oracle told me that the 2025 game will be made by a studio that has found a ridiculously simple formula: make a project that it wants to play. They won’t do it to serve the brand… Furthermore, management won’t stop them from adding something to the game that would serve to increase profits but wasn’t in line with the game design. They won’t treat their developers like numbers on a spreadsheet.
Sven Vincke’s criticism was aimed at greedy publishers, but his words seem to have caused confusion. For this reason, some players decided that the head of Larian Studios decided to praise the creators of Astro Bot, who worked under the leadership of Sony with his questionable decisions.
