Anomalies are an integral part of the Zone STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl. They come in different types and are spread across the map. There are four main categories of abnormalities, but there are several sub-variants with different behavior. You must learn how to pass them on to obtain valuable loot (artifacts). The powers of such artifacts usually correspond to the element of the anomaly in which they are found. This guide talks about all types of abnormalities and how to get through them.
Guides for STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl
Detection and resolution of anomalies
Anomalies can be detected using one of four available detectors, which can be found anywhere in the world or purchased from dealers. The initial echo detector is more than sufficient to detect any anomaly, although other detectors may provide better range or present information differently. Choose the one that is most convenient for you. When you approach the deviation, the detector will quickly beep and you will receive an instant visual or audio confirmation of the direction you want to go.
Stalkers also have an unlimited supply of bolts that you can use to throw at the anomaly and deactivate it. Use this short pause to observe the anomaly’s behavior and then proceed through it safely.
However, some anomalies have minimal pause time, while others are tightly clustered in a small area. This is where certain artifacts come into play, as they can counter the elemental damage of a specific anomaly. These types of artifacts require a free slot in your armor, and some equipment options offer up to five slots. Unfortunately, the artifacts themselves pose a risk of radiation exposure to the character, but this can be mitigated by using other counteracting artifacts.
Some suits provide little or no protection, but are ideal for anomaly investigations. Consider keeping these sets in your inventory only to absorb damage from anomalies, rather than damaging your primary equipment. This will help offset the high cost of repairing protective equipment.
Thermal anomalies
All thermal anomalies can be neutralized by having equipment and artifacts with sufficiently high thermal protection.
Burner
This single clump of flame suddenly erupts from the fiery spots on the ground if you get too close, causing the main character’s health to decrease over time. They can be easily seen and avoided both during the day and at night.
Comets
Variety of “Burners”. “Comet” appears as a fireball after the first stream of flames erupts, and then begins to chase you. If it is triggered somehow, just try to run away.
Electrical abnormalities
All electrical anomalies can be neutralized by having equipment and artifacts with sufficiently high electrical protection.
Electro
These electrical field abnormalities are analogous to the “Burner” and can be temporarily discharged by throwing a bolt at it. They are easily visible both day and night, so just try to walk around them if you come across a small number of them. If you have no choice but to break the anomaly, time the recharge cycle before continuing.
Tesla/Electro Orb
While the previous anomaly had a set path and didn’t follow you, Electro Balls are more intelligent and will follow the player. You can escape them quite easily, although ideally you should use stealth to avoid them completely if confronted in tight spaces.
Flashbang
These deviations deliberately surprise gamers. They appear out of nowhere and there seems to be no way to avoid them, but they can be circumvented. This requires quick reflexes: once you notice an anomaly, you have just milliseconds to escape before the real explosion takes place. The further you are from the explosion zone, the less damage you take. Armor and equipped inventory artifacts are the only guaranteed way to avoid losing health.
Chemical abnormalities
All chemical and radioactive abnormalities can be neutralized by having equipment and artifacts with sufficiently high chemical and radiation protection.
Fruit punch
These are clearly visible neon pools of toxic green goo. While they are stationary and easy to avoid, even staying nearby for long periods of time can cause toxic damage, making exploration of the area only possible with chemical and radioactive armor and artifacts in hand.
Gas cloud
The gas cloud appears as a stagnant green mist and causes chemical damage when interacting. Throwing a few bolts at it might fix it. However, it may appear again soon.
Giant gas bubble
Appears as a large transparent bubble in the air that distorts the background through rotation and displacement. Often found in the swamps. As you get closer, the bell starts to ‘follow’ you. Ideally, you can counter this by making initial contact with bolts, which causes it to explode and split into small bubbles. But try to do it outside the path you would like to take. This is because smaller bubbles are also very dangerous.
Gravitational anomalies
Springboard
Without the swirling leaves in the sky, these gravitational anomalies would be virtually invisible to the eye during the day, but at night they are completely invisible. It’s essentially a wall of force that pushes you back if you try to get into it. Also, “Springboard” will greatly reduce the hero’s health if you do not have proper physical protection. They are destroyed by bolts for a short time, but the easiest way is to bypass the anomaly.
Carousel
The Spinning Top is one step more powerful than the Springboard anomaly and is also almost transparent, but acts like a small whirlwind and can be heard in the gust of air. The Spinning Top will briefly trap you and do significant damage if you don’t escape it quickly enough by running in the opposite direction. If necessary, use the bolt to activate the anomaly and get through.
Vortex
The Vortex, the deadliest of the gravitational anomalies, is a bouncing crest, just as invisible, but far deadlier. It is better to avoid the “vortex” completely, as even a brief delay in throwing a lightning bolt cannot guarantee safe passage.
Glass shards
The appearance of the anomaly “Glass Shards” is a variant of “Springboard”, in which there are not only leaves, but also sharp pieces of glass. Although it is not easy to see in the dark, it is clearly audible due to the low ringing sound. This anomaly only causes blood damage if you run through it. Walking in a squat or even walking slowly through the anomaly will not cause any problems at all. Using bolts has no effect. On the other hand, these anomalies provide an effective shield against bullets, as they absorb any projectiles that pass through them.
Arc deviations
Arc Anomalies are unique anomalies or anomalous areas that you encounter while exploring the Zone. Artifacts that can be obtained from them have a prefix “Foreign” and are also unique with different buffs and debuffs.
Sphere
“Bulba” looks like a combination of “Vortex” and “Giant Gas Bubble”, but is motionless and has a powerful gravity effect. Gravity itself causes physical damage, and direct contact causes instant death. Escape by ducking and hiding behind cover, then running in the opposite direction.
Can be found in a small lake east of Zalesye, in the Small Zone.
Poppy field
At first glance an innocuous field with beautiful flowers: poppies. But this anomalous zone is actually quite deadly. If you stay on the field too long, you will become drowsy and fall asleep forever. The only way to combat this is to constantly move, use energy drinks and prevent the red petals from floating above the field.
Found on the northwestern edge of the Small Zone, near the river. Not far from the zone is an abandoned fuel tanker with a bag of refreshing drinks.
Fog
Enter the mist shrouding this anomalous area to begin the puzzle. It will be impossible to leave this area until it is completely cleared. You will have to go through all the rooms and find the artifact.
Can be found around an abandoned house in the southwestern corner of the Burnt Forest region.
Tornado
A gigantic swirling “Tornado” that is visible from far away. This anomaly moves around the area and direct contact with it will throw the main character a considerable distance. Stick to the edges as you try to climb the structures in the area to reach the center of the anomaly.
Located just behind Yaniv Station in the northwest corner of the Yaniv region.
Fire whirl
This highly visible anomaly is a bright orange fire vortex trapped in a cooling tower. Fire Tornado pulses and deals damage when nearby. Climb the scaffolding to reach the artifact. It will be necessary to stop and start again as the momentum heats up parts of the forests, making them impassable until they cool down again.
Found in the northeast cooling tower of the Cooling Towers region.
Wandering lights
This anomalous zone is only activated at night and looks like a field of neon green balls. Entering the zone itself turns everything into pitch black except the balls themselves, and also causes non-lethal hallucinations.
It is located in a clearing in the northeast of the Zaton region, but is only activated at night.
Mirage
A large sphere found on an island in the eastern Red Forest.
Emissions
The “Hide from Release” task will appear periodically as you progress through the story and learn about the Zone. This repeatable quest requires the hero to find safety during an abnormal storm before it kills you. In addition, the NPC will also announce on the radio that the “Breakout” is coming. Luckily, considering that Bursts are quite common, it’s not too difficult to hide from one of them. You just need to go to a more or less intact building.
At the very beginning of Stalker 2, the game asks you to hide in an underground bunker in Zalesye. Where can you hide if you are a few kilometers from Zalesye? For example, you can hide in large settlements, various houses, caves and other buildings that you find all over the map. There are also storm shelters on your map, marked with an orange exclamation point. These are guaranteed safe places.
You must then wait for the Burst to end and for an NPC to announce it over the radio or for your objective to be marked as complete. This usually takes a few minutes, and if you take cover in a building you haven’t looted yet, time will fly by. You can also start organizing your inventory or planning what to do next.
