Red Expo’s indie sector is located in a separate large hall. Until December 1, everyone has the opportunity to get acquainted with dozens of high-quality independent games that have passed a strict selection process. In this article we would like to draw attention to this One Way Home, a platform game with elements of horror and quest, which evoked strong associations with Little nightmares. However, upon personal acquaintance it became clear that in reality everything is not so simple. Details are in our article.
Plot of one-way traffic to home]Plot of one-way traffic to home
The plot of the local story is simple: a boy wakes up in an unknown place and cannot remember how he got there. It soon becomes clear that there is an unusual world around him, he lives according to his own terrible laws. For example, a man sees ghosts in the form of black shadows, and the red light from the windows kills everyone who is in his area of effect. There is a sense that we are facing an alien reality in the spirit of what we saw in the series Silent Hill. Whether this actually happens or is a childhood fantasy is still unknown. The second option is suggested by the pictures on the walls, which resemble children’s drawings and move when you get close to them. According to the developers, they ensure that you understand the plot of the game better.

The look of the game makes you remember second Alan Wake. The image looks as if it was painted with watercolor paint. In such an environment, monsters seem especially scary because they seem to stand out from their surroundings. A kind of dissonance arises, causing you to shiver nervously and look around.

Gameplay and non-linearity
At first it is difficult to find the differences between One Way Home and Little Nightmares. You move from left to right in a semi-3D space, moving boxes, running from enemies and solving puzzles. The controls are not always convenient, making it difficult to calculate the walking distance and holes in the floor are sometimes completely invisible. From time to time the game challenges you and forces you to perform several difficult actions in a row. The smallest delay is death. However, such hardcore cannot be called something unusual.
Another thing is the elements of non-linearity. Moreover, we are not talking about decisions in dialogues, but about the choice of gameplay. You can bet on puzzles, run through a challenging obstacle course or try to sneak past your opponents unnoticed. In fact, in many locations developers are working on not one, but three levels, tailored to different play styles. This kind of approach is rare in the industry.
Of course, now the project isn’t as authenticated and polished as “Little Nightmares.” The controls in One Way Home aren’t that useful, which is why stupid mistakes happen; there are non-obvious problems, for example, the viewing area of enemies is too large, which is not indicated in any way. However, the developers promise to take into account all comments, including those heard at Red Expo. We hope these are not just words. With the right approach we can get a worthy alternative Little nightmares 3.
