On time Half-Life 2 has become one of the most popular speedrunning games thanks to the physics of the Source engine. However, Valve almost ruined the speedrun recently by releasing a revised anniversary edition.
We are talking about a loophole in the chapter “Through the channels”. In one level, players must solve a puzzle to fill a pool under a grate with water and dive into a red-lit pipe. It was initially suggested that the sewer pipe would be closed off with an ‘invisible wall’ so that gamers would solve the riddle honestly. However, the conflict only occurred in the Xbox 360 version.
The bug in the PC version was corrected 20 years later with the release of the anniversary edition of Half-Life 2. But then speedrunners were furious: it turned out that the bug allowed you to quickly skip a level without solving the puzzle. Valve listened to the fans and recently released another patch with a notable point: ‘The collision with the underwater tube of speedrunners has been resolved’.
However, the anniversary edition is still poorly suited for speedrunning. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, speedrunners continue to use old builds of Half-Life 2, which still contain useful bugs. For example, the ability to squeeze through a wall while carrying another object in front of you.
Valve previously fixed a 17 year old bug Team Fortress 2, where the Scout’s pants are reset to the correct color. The work was in vain – the bug had to be returned.
