CD Projekt RED continues to share development details at Blocktober Cyberpunk 2077. This time the studio called level designer Marta Dobinska to talk about the design of Luxor Peak.
Luxor’s Peak is an abandoned spa complex in Dog City. There is a clash with the mini-boss Ayo Zarin, so the developers tried to create a spacious location with several levels for vertical gameplay. The authors also came up with different features based on the theme of the place.
For the mini-boss fight, I envisioned a large, open space where players could use different strategies, including sneaking around. It was important to be able to move freely around the enemy. I also wanted the location to have a theme; a setting that was interesting in itself. Together with Piotr Ruszkiewicz, an environmental artist, we chose a luxurious spa complex, which paves the way for stealth and battles among empty pools, hot tubs and decorative rocks.
When Dog City came under the rule of Kurt Hansen, construction stopped and the Luxor Peak project was left unfinished. I used abandoned scaffolding and catwalks to add vertical gameplay. Routes pass by with good visibility. The theme of the location suggested interesting ideas: in the battle with the mini-boss, water and electricity are used. Thanks to the cyber implants of the netrunner Ayo Zarin, the leader of the enemy group, she can restore her strength using electricity. During the second half of the fight, she retreats into a pool of water, making her an even more dangerous opponent.
Now CD Projekt RED is working on a full-fledged sequel to the game, the events of which are rumored to take place in Chicago. The game doesn’t even have an estimated release date yet.
