Conversation with producer Stefan Mohr
VG times: Tell us about the key features of your new game?
Stefan Mohr: We’re making a horror adventure with co-op. Reanimal will have local and online modes, but can also be played solo. You play as two children as they navigate a dark and twisted world and try to save their friends one by one.
Yes, it’s a bit of a creepy game, and if you’re familiar with Tarsier Studios’ previous projects, you can understand the general direction and know that it’s dark. It also has its lighter moments, because it is a game about children and so it hits your emotional chords. But it’s mostly horror, and we accept that.
VG times: Why should players choose your game over other projects on the market?
Stefan Mohr: I think Tarsier’s style is unique. It makes the game stand out from many others. Just take one look at the game and you’ll know there’s something special about it Little Nightmares 1 and 2.
Playing the game feels very intuitive. The game literally draws you into the story and the world, and has a challenge. We’re also giving players a little more freedom of movement than in Little Nightmares 1 and 2. For example, you can take a boat ride, which adds to the open-world feel. I wouldn’t say this is a fully-fledged open world, as the game remains linear at its core, although it does give the player a little more freedom to explore.
VG times: Which games come closest in terms of gameplay and art direction? Where did the developers get their inspiration?
Stefan Mohr: I think we’ve been hugely influenced ICO, especially in terms of revealing the main characters and their relationships through animation and other means. The ICO also had an impact on the atmosphere of the game. But of course Tarsier has his own unique style, which was formed from Little Nightmares and other projects.
Silent Hill also influenced the atmosphere and horror component of the game. I would say this is another source of inspiration.
VG times: Can you tell me what THQ considers a good sales level? What is success for you, what is normal and what is failure?
Stefan Mohr: I cannot give exact figures, but we hope to repeat the success of Little Nightmares. We hope audiences will enjoy this game as much as previous Tarsier projects, and maybe even more. We are very optimistic that we can provide players with a good experience.
VG times: Are 100,000 sales real?
Stefan Mohr: [Смеётся] I don’t think this will be enough to get all the money back.
VG times: On which platforms and when is the release planned?
Stefan Mohr: The game will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. The release date is not yet known.
It’s too early to draw any conclusions about Reanimal, but I want to believe that Tarsier will produce a worthy successor to Little Nightmares. Let us remind you of that Little Nightmares 3 is currently being made by Supermassive Games. What do you think of the upcoming release? Share your thoughts in the comments!
