We recently tested the ONEXGPU 2 external graphics card, based on the AMD Radeon RX 7800M, in the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark. The mobile version of the Radeon RX 7800M showed a significant advantage, outperforming the desktop NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070. In tests, the new product scored 15,806 points, which is 16% more than the result of the RTX 4070, which was 13,391 points.
It’s interesting to note that ONEXGPU 2 uses the OCuLink port, which has a lower bandwidth compared to PCI-Express. This means that the actual performance of the Radeon RX 7800M could be on average a quarter higher than the recorded value. When the RX 7800M hits laptops, it could be even more powerful than the mobile version of the RTX 4070.
The difference between mobile and desktop graphics cards is that the latter have higher clock speeds and more video memory, which gives them a performance advantage. Mobile graphics cards, on the other hand, are optimized for energy efficiency and smaller dimensions, which allows them to be used in laptops. Nevertheless, new mobile models, such as the RX 7800M, are showing increasingly better performance and approaching desktop versions.
So we can safely say that even mobile solutions can effectively compete with traditional desktop cards if they are made in the format of an external plug-in device, offering laptop users serious performance for games and professional applications.
