Throughout their long history, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had dozens of interpretations. However, none of them can be called a frank failure (even the films of Michael Bay (Michael Bay)). The creators have always managed to maintain a balance between the author’s vision and recognizable features of mutants. Recently, a new version was released – the cartoon “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”. We decided to find out if the turtles of 2023 could please fans again or if modern trends came to another series.

The first thing you notice right after you start looking is the drawing style. Sony’s cartoon adventures of Miles Morales set a new trend for offbeat visuals, but “Mutant Mayhem” looks odd, even by the standards of the Spider-Man: Web of Universes (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) tape. All but the turtles and Splinter are deliberately angular, ugly and repulsive. Especially the model comb people. This is partly woven into the story, because to the rat and the turtles, the outside world outside the sewers always seemed hostile and aggressive. However, it is strange to watch an entire city of real freaks.
At the same time, the backs of each scene are made on a solid five. Here the image resembles watercolor sketches or an image drawn with colored pencils. Made very unusual and interesting. Where necessary, the performers pay close attention to small details, while in other scenes they leave only light strokes, focusing on the characters.
Turtles are also drawn qualitatively and pleasantly. The main characters are definitely one of the plus points of the picture. The cartoon format is very suitable for mutants, allowing you to make facial expressions lively and expressive. Each of the characters differs not only in color blindfolds, but also in appearance, which further simplifies the understanding of what is happening.
However, we have a real origin (the story of the origin and development of the character), which is why, for example, Donatello has not yet become a computer genius, and Leonardo is far from being a leader. Because of this, the characters lack individuality. All four plus or minus are equally strong, agile and naive. But for us, the turtles are – teenagers, with all the consequences. This gives rise to some plot problems, adults risk getting bored.
Visually, the cartoon does the main thing – it is remembered. To achieve this in the modern world is not so easy, even if you will mostly remember repulsive models of people and beautiful turtles.

The plot again tells us about the formation of heroes. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are just kids and their biggest dream is to interact with humans. beaten up? Crazy. At the same time, many details of a well-known story have changed. For example, the creator of the mutagen was a mad scientist who had no friends. And besides the turtles and Splinter, who accidentally ingested the green substance, there were other animals that were purposefully experimented on.
The turtles’ father and mentor, the rat Splinter, has never had anything to do with martial arts and learned martial arts from TV sports broadcasts. It is not clear how the creators intend to introduce Shredder into the story after this, which is associated with the background of the tailed master … Looking at the changes in other heroes, it seems that the villain will become different. This is how Bebop and Rocksteady suddenly turned into positive characters.
April, of course, will also appear in history, the image of which has undergone the greatest changes. The reporter has nothing to do with Megan Fox (Megan Fox) or that sexy red-haired girl in a yellow suit from the original animated series from now on. April 2023 is a black and fat school girl. She also gets sick every time she’s on the list. That is why a reporter writes articles and cannot report live, not even within her own school.
For some reason, the creators decided that April’s nervous breakdown is a great opportunity for humor, so they spend an indecent amount of time vomiting. It looks, in modern terms, like krinzhovo.
As for the character herself, she’s normal and nothing more. As in the case of turtles, the cartoon simply does not have enough situations where the characters can show character. Only in the finals does the girl abruptly experience personal growth, solve the psychological problem and begin to work in front of the camera. Fortunately, current trends concern only the new skin color of the heroine and weight. No one touches her orientation, and April speaks very normally – without feminist slogans and references to the oppression of blacks, it’s nice.
But the villain turned out to be controversial. He has good motivation and even logic, but the behavior still eventually slides into the banal “I will destroy the world”. Given the rich bestiary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, someone more relatable could have been cast as the antagonist.
At the same time, there will be no intrigue or unexpected twists. Even human villains only appear at a certain point and also suddenly disappear. Conflicts with them lead to nothing.
The plot of “Mayhem of Mutants” is too banal and too simple. Even kids are unlikely to impress, and even adult fans are sure to make them gawk. Even a modest hour and a half timing will not save the situation.
When the rivals in Spider-Man: Web of Universes try to show off something really new and unusual, the turtle creators go off the beaten track and take the most boring thing possible: the characters’ origins. If this cartoon was made for young children, then the peculiar picture and repulsive characters clearly do not fit. Adults, on the other hand, have practically nothing to turn to – there are no adult jokes, no unusual and multi-layered characters, or even plot surprises.
Only action can captivate. The fights turned out to be really high quality and realistic. It is pure pleasure to watch the turtles use their weapons and fighting techniques. Too bad there aren’t many fights.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a very strange cartoon. The target group are the smallest viewers, but for them the picture is visually too gloomy. Adults will just be bored. For the tenth time it is a dubious pleasure to watch the formation of heroes, when in all other universes they refuse such an approach. Unfortunately, the triumph did not take place. The return of the turtles will have to wait.
