Background: Ubisoft may delete a player’s account if they do not log in for a long time
In 2020, we reported that Ubisoft could delete a player’s Uplay account (including games) if they hadn’t logged in for a long time. Recently, this news again caused a stir among gamers. All due to the fact that the company transferred this rule to the Ubisoft Connect service (the same Uplay, but after rebranding) without a corresponding notification.
Some gamers receive a notification that they can delete their account due to inactivity. To avoid this, the player must log into their account within 30 days of receiving the notice and then click the “Cancel Account Closure” button (found in the email).
It is worth noting that Ubisoft previously, in response to questions from gamers, explained that it was forced to delete inactive accounts due to the fact that this is required by the law on the protection of personal information.
As for deleting games associated with an account, the situation is more complicated. Many players argue that this is against the law in France, as digital purchases are considered the same as physical purchases. That is, they are final and cannot be taken away.
In addition, a few years ago, scandals related to the removal of games in Uplay were discussed on the Internet. Subsequently, after two years of inactivity, the player was denied access to his library. The gamer himself did not see the warning letter, because it was in the spam folder. Ubisoft, commenting on the situation, said it only deletes accounts with games after they haven’t logged in for over four years, but if you look at the official rules it says: “Upon notification, if your account has been inactive for more than six months”.
