The Video Game History Foundation conducted the first survey of the accessibility of classic games. The results are disappointing: 87% of titles released in the US before 2010 are no longer for sale.
The aim of the study is to understand how many games there are “threatenedTo do this, experts studied more than 4,000 projects, including all titles for the Game Boy.
It turned out that only 13% of classic games can be bought legally. This was also influenced by the closure of the online store for games for 3DS and Wii U, which resulted in more than 1000 titles disappearing from the market.

The most “abandoned” platform was Commodore 64 with an availability of 4.5%. If we talk about the PlayStation 2, the most popular console of all time, then only 12% of games remain on the market. The rest must either be bought on the secondary market or searched for on torrent trackers.
Interestingly, classic video games have survived in much the same way as American silent films did from 1912-1929.
In conclusion, the experts expressed hope that the study will help preserve the gaming legacy. To keep things from getting worse, the authors are proposing changes to copyright law and allowing libraries and archives to share digital copies of games.
