How to Fix D3D Fatal Error (Fatal Application Error)
This error is mainly related to the work of DirectX, which in turn helps the system to display images. You can visit the official Microsoft website and install the latest version of this tool, but if it does not help, then you can use the methods below.

Lower your graphics settings
Open the game and go to the section “Institutions”. On point “Grafic art” set values to reduce video memory consumption. You can track it in the right corner of the screen.

If your graphics card’s maximum memory is highlighted in white, the GPU is idle. This allows him to dish out the highest possible FPS. We have also selected the optimal graphics settings for you, which are described at the end of this guide.
Disable ray tracing and hair detail
In some cases, these two options may be directly related to the fatal D3D error. These are very resource-intensive features and are not suitable for owners of weak PCs. In turn, for users with powerful hardware, they can cause a crash. Make sure you have disabled these settings or the game may crash in locations with rapidly changing lighting. It is worth noting that the developers are aware of the bug and are working to fix it.
Disable Steam Launcher Game Overlay and Discord Messenger
Some users have encountered a very unusual error. When the Discord or Steam overlay is enabled, the game crashes. To get rid of the problem, simply disable the game overlay. Earlier we wrote about how this feature affects the performance of some games.
- Open Steam and go to “Institutions”by pressing the button Steam in the top left corner of the screen;
- Find and click in the left pane of the window that appears “In the game…”;
- Disable the option “Enable Steam overlay in game” and press “OK”.
- Launch Discord and click gear icon in the lower left corner of the screen;
- Go to section “Game Overlay” in the menu on the left;
- Move the check box to “Out” next to the option “Enable in-game overlay”.
Whether third-party applications such as Skype or other programs that have the ability to enable and disable the overlay are affected is still unknown.
The game crashes after a long loading time – how do I fix it?
Some gamers also encountered a crashing problem after a long initial load, but after a few days, the cause of this error was found. It’s all about the lack of RAM in your system. To solve this problem, you can increase the amount of RAM or use the paging file.
Linking a paging file:
- Press the hotkey Win+R and open the search bar;
- Enter “sysdm.cpl” without quotes and click “Enter”;
- Through section “Additionally” go to “Performance” and click “Options”;
- Click in the new window “Additionally” and press “Change”;
- Uncheck the box “Automatically choose paging file size”and then press “Specify Size”;
- In line “Original size (MB):” set the value – 8192;
- In line “Maximum size (MB):” add – 16384 (need twice as much);
- Click “To ask” And “OK”.

Remark: Make sure to restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
Close background programs
Some installed applications may conflict with the game for some reason. Be sure to complete any unused programs before launching Resident Evil 4. Otherwise, it may lead to crashes, hangs, and other errors. Closing background applications also helps free up system resources for a more stable gaming experience.
Run a Steam file integrity check
If, after all the tips in this guide, the game still crashes or won’t load, then you should do a full check of the game’s system files in Steam.
- Open the Steam client and search for Resident Evil 4 in your game library;
- Click “PKM” per game and select “Characteristics”;
- On the tab “Local Files” click on the article “Verify integrity of game files”;
- Wait for the check to finish and then restart your PC.

Game does not save in chapter 12 – how to solve the problem?
At the beginning of chapter 12 you see a cutscene, after which Leon receives one of the plot items (no spoilers). However, after doing this, some players on consoles and PCs are having an issue where they are unable to save the game with a key item in their inventory. If you encounter this error, try going through the chapter without saving. The developers are aware of the issue and promise to fix it with the next patch.
