The best places to build a base in Sons of the Forest – how to make a gate and lock the door

Save progress in Sons of the Forest does not need to build a large and fortified shelter – a single piece of tarpaulin and a stick will suffice. But at the same time there is a good construction mechanic in the game, with which you can build a real house and enclose it with a fence. In this guide, we’ll show you how to build a house and a gate, how to lock a door, and tell you the best places to build a base in the game.

Players can use ready-made drawings of houses or build their own house according to their taste. Used to install drawings guide, which you get at the very beginning of the game. It can be opened with the key “B” or through inventory.

The tree house can only be built according to the drawing in the manual. To do this, open the journal and select a completed building or a platform for the building.

Get the required number of logs and also install a rope with which you can climb up. Just do not ask Kelvin to participate in the construction process – there were many cases when the satellite cut down the tree on which the building was erected.

You have the right to build a fence from ordinary logs. To do this, first install them close to each other in any order. Then grab an ax and aim at the top of the tree trunk. It is necessary to record the moment when the cone appears as a red dotted line.

Hit the tree trunk once with the ax. So you get a wooden fence.

How to build a door

To build a regular door, you need seven sturdy logs and three planks. Two planks are made from one trunk. Put the logs on top of each other and then take the ax in your hands. Hover over a central log to make a red dotted line appear. Press LMB.

Repeat the action with all wood blocks except the top and bottom. You should get the same as shown in the screenshot.

Now take two blocks and cut them in half lengthwise. To do this, grab an ax and move the cursor over the center of the forest so that a red dotted line appears.

Take the resulting planks and go to the doorway so that a white dotted arrow appears. Click on LMB and place the planks.

How to build a gate

To build a gate, you need to collect five or six logs and place them exactly in a row, as shown in the screenshot below.

Take a sturdy piece of wood and walk to a level fence made of at least five planks. A white dotted line should appear at this point. Click on LMB to place the log.

This strengthens the gate on both sides and makes it harder for enemies to destroy it.

If desired, you can place multiple ports. In this case, the enemies are unlikely to break in through the main entrance, most likely the camp will be attacked elsewhere.

Unlike heavy gates, almost all enemies can open a regular door if it is not locked with a bolt. To protect your hero from the inside, just grab a stick and head for the door. When a white dotted arrow appears, click LMB. The hero installs a primitive lock, which can be locked with the action key if necessary.

By the phrase “the best place” we mean the safest location where you will be protected from the natives and various monsters. The game is designed so that enemies appear on the doorstep of your shelter at least once every few days. They can be both cannibals and mutants. After completing the storyline, a two-headed monster will also fall on you, which does not care about the fence of the stockade and other obstacles.

In the summer, you can hide from all enemies in only one place – on a small island in the middle of the lake in front of the waterfall. This body of water is located in the northwest of the map.

Of course, the easiest way to build a base on this island is in winter. It is not easy to erect a building here in the summer, but there is an effective way.

There are several trees on the same island. We recommend leaving at least one to build a tree house. So you can use the base in winter, when the lake freezes over and the cannibals can get you.

We get to the island and clear it of small trees and shrubs. We decided to build two treehouses, so we left both of the large trees that have been growing here since the very beginning of the game.

Now it remains to chop wood and move it here. But how do you do that? In fact, everything is simple. We get to every coast, cut down trees and throw firewood as far as possible towards the island. Soon they will be nailed to them and you can easily pick up logs and use them for construction.

If the logs don’t float towards the island, push them by jumping into the water. It is advisable to have fins at the same time, as the movement in the water will increase significantly.

If you don’t already have a wetsuit, use the standard technique of grabbing logs in the water. So you will not be able to capture the log, but it will get closer to you. This way you can also move the planks on the water.

This takes a little time, but in the summer you can feel completely safe in such a camp. Appearing cannibals and monsters will just wave at you from the shore, but they won’t be able to reach the island. Even if they try, they will die in the water (we checked).

Once the house is finished, all you have to do is wait for winter to build a picket fence. If you wish, you can do this in the summer, but in this case you will have to spend much more time moving the logs through the water.

For wintering, a place near a waterfall is suitable. Since the main bodies of water freeze in winter, players cannot run out of fresh water because of this.

Be sure to build a tree house and enclose your camp with a wooden fence. This will allow some time to stop the robbers who will try to enter. Even if you can’t fight back, you can climb into the tree house at any time and wait for a while.

We also recommend building a watchtower. Among other things, it can be used as a defensive fortification and perform targeted fire on enemies.
