Narrative director God of War: Ragnarok Matt Sophos talked about an early draft of the game’s script. As it turned out, Kratos’ struggle with fate initially took place in a slightly different way.

The plot of the second part is closely related to the ending God of War 2018. Let’s recall for a moment: Kratos finds himself in Jotunheim and finds a fresco predicting his entire life until his own death. In Ragnarok, the hero never dies, because he could get better and change his fate.
However, Sophos still wanted to kill Kratos. In the draft version of the script, the Spartan dies at the very beginning, during the fight with Thor. Thanks to Atreus, Kratos will emerge from the underworld. And at the same time he learns that he has not seen his son for 20 years.
Lead developer Eric Williams did not approve the script. According to him, the twist with Kratos’s death was played too often and was not emotional enough. After some deliberation, the studio rewrote the script.
Sophos also added that the current ending of the game should make it clear to players that they too can get better.
There is nothing written that cannot be rewritten, and as long as you can change your life, you are not bound by fate. And when we decided this was the story we wanted to tell, we realized that Kratos couldn’t die.
Otherwise we seemed to say that Kratos cannot change. That would suck.
