In the seminal short film ‘Cerdita’, Carlota Pereda has already proposed a very suggestive and unexpected combination: country costumes, fear of fatness, bullying and psychopathic killer. Y totem hero: Laura Galán. Fourteen minutes of humiliation and cruelty in the sun, and the bitter sweat of an extreme summer suffered by a girl named Sara, some of her malevolent classmates, are now extended in a film that takes us deep into the world. placing adolescent suffering, female body and aesthetic violence at the center of the discourse.
That’s why it’s so encouraging social reflection to be a seed pure horror device where the meat is stained and injured in different ways. It’s as if Catherine Breillat’s ‘Fat Girl’ intersects Tobe Hopper’s ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ with a pop key through the chronicle of the grotesque Iberian noir.
There may be some imbalances in the narrative, some elements may not quite fit together, but Carlota Pereda’s ability to structure her own universe, to create and build atmospheres of brutal discomfort in daylight is undeniable. Images of an ominous expressive power that suddenly occupies a cult place in the iconography of contemporary terror. because they are loaded with iconic meaning. And the offal gets a reason to be in ‘Cerdita’ with the ironic play that the filmmaker plays about his protagonist through the slavery of the gaze of others. That’s why he doesn’t shy away from ‘blood’, blood and internal organs, any form of violence. That’s why it happens truly a cathartic festival of liberation from the body and prejudice.
