A US tourist who decided to eat ice cream on the steps of one of the fountains in Rome at one in the morning was fined €450. This has been reported Guard.

A 55-year-old man with beer was sentenced on Saturday, September 3, for violating a city rule that forbids installing fountains on stairs. This happened near the Fontana de Catekumeni in the Monti district, built to the design of architect Battista Rusconi in 1589.

It was recorded that the fountain was surrounded with barrier tape on Friday evening, but it was removed later. Therefore, the tourist did not know that it is forbidden to sit on the steps. He also did not pay attention to the appeal made to him by the police, which resulted in the American being fined.

As the tourist later noted, he was unaware that in 2017 the Roman authorities banned eating, drinking and sitting on the steps of the fountains.

The ban aims to protect historical structures from possible damage.
