Summary:

Maria Chapdelaine, a seventeen-year-old girl in 1910, lives with her family on the banks of the Péribonka River north of Lake Saint-Jean, Canada. The Chapdelaines work tirelessly to push the jungle to its limits. It is a house where even physical fatigue cannot extinguish the warmth of family life. Strong and hopeful, Maria finds herself faced with a major dilemma. His ex-neighbour, François Paradis, a free-spirited fur hunter and guide to foreigners, whom he has loved since childhood, promises to return to marry her in the spring. But at the end of spring, two new suitors emerge. Lorenzo Suprenant, who works in Massachusetts factories that offer Maria a comfortable life in an American city, and her brave neighbor Eutrope Gagnon, who asks her to clear trees with her on the land she’s acquired near Chapdelaine. .
