In a recent interview published on the official Star Wars website to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, storyboard artist Iain McCaig revealed a plot twist involving Obi-Wan Kenobi. It completely changed his story while revealing the meaning of the character’s famous line.
It turns out that in the prequel trilogy, Obi-Wan was not the hero played by Ewan McGregor, but his mentor. Liam Neeson would play the real Kenobi, while Qui-Gon would be his padawan. As George Lucas originally intended, after Obi-Wan’s death at the hands of the Sith, Ewan McGregor’s character would adopt the name Jedi in honor of his mentor.
For a time, the older Jedi was called Obi-Wan, and the younger was Qui-Gon. It was very moving that at the end, when Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon defeats Darth Maul and sees his teacher on his final journey, he not only continues his work but also takes his name. Qui-Gon becomes Obi-Wan.
This is how it was coined during the filming of A New Hope in 1977. Fans will remember that when Luke Skywalker and the ancient Jedi first met, the latter responded to the name “Obi-Wan” with the phrase: “I Haven’t heard that name in a long time.” However, George Lucas later confused Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and the character’s phrase lost its meaning.
As for the franchise itself, it is still in a precarious state. The recent failure of the Acolyte series led to the cancellation of the second season, and rumors began to circulate within Disney about the impending resignation of the head of Lucasfilm.
