Some components of cosmetics, household chemicals and medicines can trigger an allergy to the sun. First of all, we are talking about photosensitizers and photoallergens. Dermatovenereologist Anna Zhilkina, cosmetologist of the Atlas clinic chain, told Gazeta.ru about this.

The doctor explained that the so-called allergy to the sun is actually an abnormal skin response to ultraviolet light.

“Sun allergy manifests itself as a very small and itchy rash, redness and swelling of the skin on open areas of the body. An important role in this pathological skin reaction is played by photosensitizers – substances that increase the sensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet radiation.

According to him, photosensitizers are found in many herbs and plants, especially parsley, celery, yarrow, St. John’s Wort, figs, buckwheat, pine nuts and lemons.

The cosmetologist added that in some people this process in the skin proceeds according to the mechanism of a delayed type of allergic reaction. In such cases, the photoallergen absorbs ultraviolet light and causes an allergic reaction.

“Photoallergens are often found in sunscreens, cosmetics, perfumes, as well as soaps, shampoos, and household chemicals. Among the drugs, photoallergens include external pain relievers with ketoprofen, some antibiotics, tranquilizers and antidepressants.
