Nikita Kaminsky-Dvorzhetsky, chief dentist-orthodontist of the Dentistoff scientific dentistry network, told socialbites.ca how to treat bruxism.

Among the methods of combating bruxism – involuntary teeth grinding – the doctor first of all listed orthodontic devices:

“Splints, which are hard plastic mouth guards, are made to order and, contrary to popular belief, are not just worn at night. They help prevent teeth from crowding and the damage that results.”

According to Nikita Kaminsky-Dvorzhetsky, to treat bruxism, a specialist may prescribe medication (muscle relaxants) to relax the chewing muscles.

“If bruxism is caused by malocclusion or jaw abnormalities, the patient may be offered correction with braces,” the dentist emphasized.

If bruxism is caused by psychological factors, stress reduction techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, and yoga would be appropriate.
