Allergies to pets can develop at any age, and if the pet cannot find a good home, the effect of the allergen may be reduced. Allergist, Ph.D., immunologist at Meditsina JSC (Academician Roitberg clinic) told socialbites.ca about this. Sergey Bykov.
“The best solution to pet allergies is to avoid contact with them. Often the only correct decision is to find a new home for the pet and hand it over to safe hands. If this is not possible, then measures should be taken to limit people’s contact with allergens,” Bykov explained.
According to the immunologist, the room needs to be regularly vacuumed, wet cleaned and special filters installed to purify the air.
“Remove the carpets from the room, do not allow your pet into the bedroom, especially the bed, bathe the animals, do not let them lick you,” Bykov added.
He noted that if you come into contact with an animal, you should wash your hands, face and eyes, as well as change your clothes.
The doctor said that allergies can be alleviated by taking antihistamines, hormonal drugs, nasal steroid sprays – these should be prescribed by an allergist.
“Also, clinical trials of allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) against cat allergens are being conducted in Russia. The method involves injecting small doses of a specific allergen (called an allergen vaccine) into the body to gradually reduce sensitivity to irritants produced by animals. But this approach may emerge in the long term,” Bykov said.
