Luiza Avtandilyan, Russian dentist and founder of Smilestudio, told socialbites.ca why gums hurt and what needs to be done to prevent gum disease.

“Swelling in the gum area, discoloration of soft tissue, bad breath, bleeding and aching or throbbing pain accompanied by fever may be symptoms of serious dental diseases. “These signs may indicate the development of gingivitis and periodontitis,” the expert began.

He also added that in this case, professional oral hygiene is performed because tartar is a source of infection.

“Unpleasant sensations in the oral cavity can be associated with recent dental surgery, for example, due to tooth extraction or root canal filling. “If pain and discomfort continue to bother you a week after visiting a specialist, you need to see a dentist to rule out alveolitis, periostitis and dental cysts,” explained the doctor.

According to him, the cause of pain in the gums may be the wrong toothbrush.

“Sometimes, if a person uses a very hard toothbrush or brushes their teeth carelessly, it can irritate the gums. In this case, it is recommended to choose a toothbrush marked “soft” and carry out the routine with careful vertical movements from the gum edge to the tooth edge, without applying strong pressure to the teeth. And it is best to finish brushing your teeth by rinsing your mouth with a special strengthening rinse based on natural extracts,” said the dentist.

Pain may also occur when eating hard or very hot food or in case of injury with improperly selected dentures. Gum health is also directly affected by diet and lifestyle.

“Often vitamin C deficiency leads to recurrence of gingivitis, abundance of carbohydrates in the diet increases the sensitivity of the gums, and smoking can lead to exposure of tooth necks and periodontal diseases,” the expert added.

Louise Avtandilyan also listed the main recommendations for preventing bleeding and gum sensitivity.

“Careful oral care throughout the day, such as brushing your teeth in the morning and evening, using dental floss and irrigator, giving up bad habits and including in your diet healthy foods rich in minerals (calcium, phosphorus) and vitamins A, B, C, D,” said the dentist.

In conclusion, he noted that the causes of the disease may be malocclusion pathologies, hormonal changes, decreased immunity, previous infections and chronic diseases.
