Luiza Avtandilyan, Russian dentist and founder of Smilestudio, listed 7 products that worsen dental health and cause dangerous dental diseases. He told socialbites.ca about this.
“Some of the foods that are most harmful to teeth are canned and pickled vegetables, as well as pickles due to the high content of acetic acid in their composition. It is also recommended to include citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit and lemon). “Aggressive acids weaken the protective properties of tooth enamel and create an acidic environment in the mouth, suitable for the growth of bacteria,” the expert began.
He also called for giving up chips, crackers and snacks.
“These popular snacks contain high amounts of starch and hidden sugars, which adhere to the surface of teeth and remain in the cavities for long periods of time, creating an ideal environment for the spread of pathogenic microorganisms that cause tooth decay. As a result of frequent consumption of such products with poor oral hygiene, problems with the gums (gingivitis and tartar) can occur, ultimately all this can lead to periodontal disease, loosening of teeth and their loss in the future,” said Louise Avtandilyan .
And the last thing he noticed was carbohydrate foods.
“Potato and porridge dishes, sweet buns and even ordinary bread also pose a danger to dental health. The fact is that bacteria living in the oral cavity feed on carbohydrates and produce acids that contribute to the leaching of minerals from enamel and tooth decay. If the effect of acid on enamel continues for a long time – for example, you ate a sandwich at night, did not brush your teeth and went to bed, areas of demineralization may form on its surface, which are the first stages of caries development. This is often accompanied by increased tooth sensitivity and acute pain, especially on contact with hot and cold foods,” the doctor concluded.
To avoid negative consequences when consuming foods that are harmful to teeth, you must follow the main rule – rinse your mouth with clean water immediately after eating or use chewing gum without added sugar to increase saliva production.
