Experts from the Tutu travel service have selected five unusual dishes from around the world that have long become part of the cuisines of Russian regions. They told socialbites.ca more information about each of them.

“Let’s start with Gobajou. In Vladivostok, you can try the popular Chinese dish gobazhou, which is fried pork pieces with starch and sweet-sour sauce. It is believed that a Chinese chef invented gobazhou at the beginning of the 20th century for Russian-speaking workers building the China Eastern Railway.
“In Vladivostok, gobazhou is served both in chifankas (cheap eateries) and large Chinese restaurants,” the experts began.

They suggested to try Kalakukko as well.

“Karelian cuisine is famous for its pastries and, of course, fish. When you come to the region, you should definitely try the Finnish kalakukko pie made from rye flour. In Finland, kalakukko is often prepared for holidays, especially Christmas. The cake resembles an oval loaf of bread filled with fish fillets. Another important ingredient of the cake is bacon. “The dough of Kalakukko is generally made without yeast, and as a rule, fish from the salmon family is used for the filling,” they said.

According to them, bedbugs in the Kaliningrad region should not be ignored.

“Klops are meatballs with sauce and potatoes and are very simple to prepare. Some recipes also include sardine fillets added to ground meat. Koenigsberg beetles are different from onion beetles. Onion bug is a Latvian dish made from sirloin by cutting the meat into pieces and frying in oil. Today, Königsberg klops are served in many popular restaurants in Kaliningrad and other cities such as Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk. Another German, or rather Prussian, dish popular in the region is Königsberg fleck, which resembles a thick soup made from veal tripe, experts wrote.

Another dish from another country is khorkhog.

“In the Trans-Baikal Region, you can try the popular Mongolian dish khorkhog, cooked in a covered cauldron or tin can. Often lamb meat is used for cooking. It is cut into small pieces, spices and vegetables are added. “The main feature of the dish is the addition of hot smooth stones directly to the meat,” explained the experts.

As a result, they noted the chettbuls in the Leningrad region.

“The dish with the unusual name chettbullar (or kottbullar) is the same famous Swedish meatballs. Typically, Swedish meatballs are served with potatoes and lingonberry sauce. “For example, in Vyborg, in the Leningrad region, where this dish is served in many establishments,” they concluded.
