Choosing a hat that is not the right size, suitable for weather conditions or hair type can lead to hair problems and baldness. Dermatologist and trichologist Anastasia Mareeva of the Likato Professional brand told socialbites.ca about this.
Exposure to freezing has a negative effect on hair: their quality deteriorates, porosity, brittleness, dryness, split ends appear, which leads to loss of length and hair loss. However, according to the doctor, choosing the wrong hat can have a similar effect.
“A common mistake is buying a hat that is the wrong size, especially one that has a stiff base or brim. Another misconception is that the same headgear is used in different seasons and weather conditions. In both cases, this can lead to deterioration of the hair and scalp, and in the long run, baldness,” said Mareeva.
The trichologist explained that you should have several hats for different temperatures. For cold days, thick woolen hats are ideal, in other cases it is better to wear a hat made of lighter fabric. Those with long hair should use a hood to prevent wind damage to the strands. When choosing a hat, you need to pay attention to your hair type.
“Small blisters, pimples, peeling, crusting, sweating, increased sebum secretion, itching, burning, pain – choosing the wrong hat can lead to these. In addition, dense heads put pressure on the trunk, and brittle, curly, frizzy hair in these areas breaks, leading to loss of volume and length,” explained the trichologist.
The expert said that to choose a hat, you need to determine the size of your head – use a centimeter to measure its circumference 2 cm from the eyebrows. It is important to focus on the resulting figure when purchasing a headboard – otherwise there is a high risk of encountering problems.
“Men especially suffer from them: when wearing tight hats with hard edges on the neck and in the occipital area, areas of baldness appear due to friction, as well as small and medium-sized inflammatory elements, which sometimes require antibacterial treatment and other treatment methods.” Mareeva emphasized.
He added that wearing tight hats for a long time can lead to micro-inflammations around the hair follicles due to hair tension and long-term pressure.
“In addition, thick woolen or synthetic hats negatively affect the condition of the scalp, as they create a “greenhouse effect”: excessive sweating occurs, sebum secretion increases, crusting, peeling, and inflammatory elements occur. This can lead to losses,” the expert concluded;
The trichologist also warned against wearing a hat indoors or in the subway: due to overheating, the condition of the scalp will worsen, which will affect hair growth and quality and can lead to alopecia in the future.
