Costume designer Jose Fernandez, who took part in the creation of Batman Forever, finally revealed why he used the same bat nipples when devising the costume for the Dark Knight. It was they who later began to appear in memes and jokes that ridiculed the film.
In Val Kilmer’s Batman Forever costume, nipples were one of the things I added. To me it wasn’t a fetish, it was more related to Roman armor – something like Centurions. And in the comics, the characters always looked like they were naked and sprayed on – it’s all about the anatomy, and I’d like to emphasize that. So I added the nipples. I had no idea it would cause such a buzz.
Batman Forever was released in 1995. The Dark Knight was played by Val Kilmer. The film received mixed reviews from the public. So, for example, his rating on IMDb is 5.4 points.
