British physicist James Clerk Maxwell’s book A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism returned to the library 119 years after it was borrowed. It has been reported New York Post.
Stuart Plain, curator of rare books at West Virginia University, found the print lost 119 years ago among the donated books. He noted the stamp that the book was last borrowed from the New Bedford Public Library in February 1904. Plain immediately contacted the Special Collections Librarian in New Bedford and briefed him on the find.
While the book is not a rare edition of A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, the cranberry skin is a relic of its time, which New Bedford librarians gladly take home.
“It came back in very good condition. “Someone kept it on a beautiful bookshelf and gave it to others because it’s been so well preserved,” said Olivia Melo, director of the New Bedford Public Library.
Per New Bedford Library policy, the penalty for late returns is 5 cents for each day of delay. Thus, for 119 years, the reader would have to pay a fine of $2.1 thousand.
