During excavations at the site of the Pompeii Archaeological Park near Naples, archaeologists found a fresco with a still life depicting pizza. It has been reported Guard.

A fresco believed to be at least 2,000 years old was found on the wall in the corridor of a building with an oven in its annex. The fresco depicts a silver tray on which there is a round apple bread, a glass of wine, dates, pomegranates, and a fruit resembling a pineapple. Experts noted that focaccia in still life is flavored with morettum, or spices, an herbal cheese eaten by the ancient Romans.

Scholars have suggested that the still life was inspired by the Greek hospitality ritual “xenia”, so the tray depicts gifts offered to guests as part of a tradition that dates back to the Hellenistic period.

Gabriel Zuchtrigel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, said the frescoes reflect the contrast between “thrifty and simple food” and “the luxury of silver trays and the complexity of artistic and literary representations”.

How can we not remember pizza, which was born as a ‘poor’ dish in Southern Italy and now conquered the whole world and is served in starred restaurants?

Gino Sorbillo, owner of one of the oldest pizzeria in Naples, is also sure that the pizza is depicted in the fresco.

“In ancient Pompeii, there were forms of flatbread made from grain, water, salt, and possibly beer as leavening agents. They could then be filled with vegetables or fish. It was an ancient form of pizza,” he detailed.
