Nettle indicates excess nitrogen in the topsoil, bacterial contamination from ground cover weeds such as wood lice, and nutrient-poor topsoil from thistle, horse sorrel, and comfrey.

Alice Fowler suggested fertilizing the soil with organic carbon fertilizers to reduce weeds. It can be compost, cardboard or withered leaves.
