Luiza Avtandilyan, dentist, founder and chief physician of the Smilestudio clinic, listed bad habits that destroy teeth. The doctor told this in an interview with socialbites.ca.
The doctor named smoking one of the most common bad habits that negatively affect dental and gum health. According to Louise Avtandilyan, smoking can cause many problems, from bad breath to discoloration and weakening of tooth enamel, to oncology.
The dentist says that the habit of eating before bed is no less harmful.
Avtandilyan does not recommend and usually snacks between meals. “During snacking, unlike a full meal, saliva is not fully produced. Dental units are poorly washed from food particles adhering to the interdental spaces, and the process of fermentation and active reproduction of microorganisms begins in the oral cavity. All this leads to increased accumulation of bacterial plaque and the development of caries,” he explained.
According to the doctor, the habit of biting a pencil or a ballpoint pen leads to the formation of microcracks and chips on the surface of the tooth enamel, and also makes the teeth mobile, disrupting the blood circulation in the root system. The same applies to opening packages or biting threads with the front incisors.
The dentist advised to refuse candies and hard caramels, if possible, and also to avoid contrasting temperatures – do not drink ice cream with tea or coffee, and do not drink ice water after hot meals.
