Last fall, the Central Council of Church Bells (CCCBR) issued a call for people to learn the profession of ringing bells and join the 30,000 people currently employed in the profession. Only about 1,750 people applied, but many more continue to be trained.
According to CCCBR employee Vicky Chapman, the shortage of bells will be remedied by moving from one church to another on coronation day. “We may need several bells to visit several churches in one day. We hope the bells ring in as many churches as possible,” she said.
It takes up to 20 hours to teach someone to ring the bells alone, Chapman says, but “much more” to do it in a group. Experienced bellmen make every effort to bring the newcomers up to the coronation on May 6. “The next four weeks are going to be pretty intense,” Chapman said.
The coronation at Westminster Abbey will take place on the morning of Saturday, May 6th. After the ceremony, the king and queen consort will return to Buckingham Palace with a “coronation procession” that will include other members of the royal family.
