A group of 33 swimmers are accused of ‘chasing’ dolphins off Hawaii. writes about it new york post.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the swimmers were under investigation after they were caught “aggressively chasing” a dolphin pack in Hawaii on March 26. Drone footage showed how the group followed the mammals even when the animals changed direction.
Officers from the Department of Conservation and Resource Conservation (DO-CARE) told the swimmers about the violation, and as soon as they were out of the water, “uniformed officers” began checking them out.
According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration law, no one should come within 45 meters of a Hawaiian spinner dolphin, which is also 3.7 kilometers from shore.
Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, swimmers can face fines of up to $20,000 or a year in prison.
