The city of Saint-Ouen, north of Paris, introduced the first paid vacation system for menstruating women in France. It has been reported France24.
From 27 March, every woman can take up to two days off per month with the approval of the doctor and there is no loss of wages for missed working time. In addition, for this period, the employees of the enterprise may request the management to provide them with the opportunity to work from home.
The innovation was announced on International Women’s Day by the city’s mayor, Karim Buamran, and stated that he hopes to inspire other local governments with the example of the municipality of Saint-Ouen.
“We have an obligation to end this silent suffering and of course we refuse to acknowledge the existence of such suffering,” Karim Bouamran told radio France Info on Monday (March 27th).
He added that the aim of the innovation is to “break the taboo on this subject” and to ensure that women who are going through painful periods “do not feel stigmatized”.
