For those who are new to the sport, the motivation to train is lost due to the lack of quick results, the long journey to the gym and insufficient load. This was told socialbites.ca by a sociologist, head of the sports research laboratory of CSP “Platform” Maria Makusheva.
“Most adults start and stop exercising several times in their lives. Motivation is easy to evoke, but difficult to maintain: 36% of respondents do not exercise at all. According to a new report from our lab, 8 out of 10 people among them tried once, but gave up,” said Maria Makusheva.
The sociologist noted that those who start sports and take long breaks “accumulate the experience of failure and fear.”
“Most beginners have big and utilitarian goals: lose weight, be as energetic as in their 20s, have a healthy back, etc. Along the way, firstly, loss of motivation when they first achieve results, and secondly, frustration from lack of quick victories. “Any goal delayed is weaker than the pleasure of the process. Those who manage to find the joy of the process in sports stay for a long time,” said Makusheva.
The expert added that the road from home to the gym is of great importance.
“If you have to fit a long commute to the gym into a busy schedule, any motivation will suffer. Walking distance sports wins. In this respect, it is of great importance to develop the urban environment (running and walking paths, sports fields) and the network of small clubs.”
Also, according to Maria Makusheva, unprofessional advice for beginners leads to loss of motivation.
“Unqualified coaches, networking consulting, any kind of online marathon can suggest an insufficient load for a person, thus leading to rapid fatigue and frustration. “It’s important to rely on professional advice for sustainable motivation.”
The expert added that motivation is triggered by the environment and those who have sports habits that have been instilled at least since childhood are “depleted”.
“Joint education with family and children is one of the most effective ways to attract children and form a habit in them, to maintain their interest in sports,” said Maria Makusheva.
