Vegan-friendly desserts that contain no animal products can exceed the calories of egg and dairy desserts. Confectioner Dmitry Duran told socialbites.ca about this.

“The biggest danger with vegan candies is that they actually have higher calories than non-vegan products. At the same time, the nutritional value of such cakes may be much lower, as they will be devoid of animal products (eggs, milk protein, fats),” Duran said.

He explained that the increased calorie content of such desserts is given by nuts and dried fruits, which makes us call vegan desserts high-carb foods.

“In general, weight gain is seen even in novice vegans who often starve when they switch to a new diet and try to stifle it with high-carb foods,” the pastry chef warned.

According to the expert, it is possible to reduce the energy value of plant-based desserts by replacing honey with sweeteners with less calories.

The main way to cut calories is to use low-calorie Jerusalem artichoke syrup instead of honey as a sweetener. The calorie content of honey is 329 kcal per 100 g, Jerusalem artichoke syrup for comparison is 267 kcal, ”advised Dmitry Duran.

He added that while natural juices can be used as sweeteners, “freshly squeezed juices contain more calories than the fruit from which they are extracted.”

Finally, you can replace the honey in the dessert with prebiosweet-based sweeteners, which can be purchased at a sports nutrition store.

“You don’t need to be afraid of such products, they have nothing to do with tablet equivalents sold in supermarkets. “These are useful analogues that are suitable for a healthy diet and are often additionally enriched with prebiotics.”
