The toothpicks used to clean the food residues between the teeth are often harmful when used incorrectly. The chief physician of the Megastom clinic, Vladimir Losev, told socialbites.ca about this.
“Using a toothpick can cause injury and then the spread of infection, for example, if a person does not know that a toothpick is a disposable product,” said Vladimir Losev.
He explained that he has patients in his office who save floss and toothpicks—after one use, they leave them on the table to reuse.
“This is very dangerous and wrong, as it can lead to localized inflammation of the gums after injury and stomatitis,” the dentist warned.
He also admitted to seeing patients with splinters from wooden toothpicks.
“People use this product for a long time and it softens or breaks down under the influence of saliva. A splinter can cause purulent inflammation in the gums, ”Losev said.
The dentist noted that with a healthy oral cavity, you can use a special rinse to get rid of food residues.
“If this happens quite often and it becomes necessary to apply additional measures to remove food residues from the interdental space and periodontal pockets, it may be a symptom of periodontitis, a disease that leads to tooth loss,” said Vladimir Losev.
