The countdown to the 2023 Oscar Awards premiere is coming to an end. The 95th annual Academy Awards will go down in history as the first after Will Smith’s attack on Chris Rock in 2022 that led to the creation of a pioneering protocol to prevent anything like this from happening again in the future. Here’s just one of seven things about this edition that every fan of these awards should know.
The red carpet kicks off in front of Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater at midnight, and at 2:00 p.m. the world’s most anticipated awards show will begin after most of the stars have passed in front of the cameras.
The Academy has had a late reaction to Will Smith’s slap in the face, but they won’t let that happen again this year. For the 2023 Oscars, the organization has created a complete protocol designed to facilitate coordination and communication, enabling a rapid response to any unexpected event.
The stakes are predominantly placed on Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama ‘The Fabelmans’. However, ‘Everything is Everywhere at the Same Time’ has serious options to surprise the American director and win the award with its original approach and an unconventional story in Hollywood.
Not a single Spaniard will compete for a statuette at the 95th Academy Awards. However, the national cinema will be represented by Antonio Banderas from Málaga, who will be one of the people responsible for announcing the winners and delivering the prize. The biggest hope for this year is Carla Simón’s ‘Alcarràs’, which won a Golden Bear at the Berlinale but failed to be nominated for Best International Film.
The Academy offered Chris Rock to present the premiere as a minor apology after the notorious slap in 2022, but the comedian turned the offer down. Finally, Jimmy Kimmel, who has already served as master of the ceremony in 2017 and 2018, will moderate the ceremony. Additionally, it is interesting that there are multiple drivers each year in the four releases since the last release offered by Kimmel (2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022). However, the comedian will do it alone again.
The film nominated for the most awards in this number is ‘Everything is everywhere at once’, which could leave the Dolby Theater with 11 statuettes under its seat. Next up are ‘All Quiet Front’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, each garnering 9 nominations.
It is surprising that Andrea Riseborough, in particular, was nominated for Best Actress among the names competing for the ‘big’ awards. The not-so-popular or overly-known translator made headlines when, after an unexpected and powerful marketing campaign, he had her choose the statuette for her work on ‘To Leslie’. She did not receive any other recognition, even in the form of nominations. The Academy came to investigate if there was anything behind the unexpected support of figures like Sarah Paulson, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts or Jennifer Aniston.
