Facial swelling in the morning in people over the age of 45 can be a sign of various diseases. Anna Novikova, a cardiologist at the Nearmedic clinic in Simonovsky Val, told socialbites.ca about this.
According to the cardiologist, different types of edema occur with various pathologies.
“Soft, watery, warm to the touch, morning swelling of the face, both localized only in the under-eye areas and diffusely, can occur in various kidney diseases (pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, amyloidosis). Such pathologies are usually accompanied by urination disorders, pain in the lumbar region, visual changes in the urine.
Swelling also occurs with hypothyroidism, that is, with a violation of the function of the thyroid gland.
“The extreme degree of hypothyroidism is myxedema. In this case, the edema is cool, soft, extending not only to the face, but also to the trunk. The skin becomes thinner, dries up, acquires a grayish tint, the contours of the face are smoothed, hair loss is also noted – first of all, eyebrow hairs fall out, ”said the cardiologist.
He noted that swelling can also occur as a result of Quincke’s edema – it is “a reaction to the effects of various biological and chemical factors, usually of an allergic nature (insect bite, taking a new drug or food)”. Edema can occur locally – on the lips, nose, ear, palpebral fissures. In this case, you should immediately consult a doctor so that it does not spread to the tongue and throat.
At the same time, slight swelling of the face in the morning, according to Anna Novikova, is not necessarily associated with pathology.
“The wrong cosmetics, sleeping on a pillow that is too high, excessive water consumption, smoked or salty foods before bed can all cause puffy faces,” the cardiologist said.
