The coronation chair of English monarchs, made at the end of the 13th century, is the coronation of III. It was sent for restoration before Charles’ coronation. He writes about it”BBC“.

Experts at Westminster Abbey described the 700-year-old oak throne as “extremely fragile”. Restorers are busy cleaning the chair and stabilizing the peeling layers of gilding.

The historic coronation is “a unique work of art”, according to expert Christa Blesley. “This is the oldest surviving piece of furniture still used for its original purpose,” she said.

The throne was made by order of King Edward I, who reigned from 1272 to 1307, and has been used in almost all coronations ever since.

As Blasley puts it, the coronation chair is “not a museum piece.” He had to endure several difficult trials. For example, tourists and schoolchildren made graffiti in the 18th and 19th centuries. The chair was later damaged in a bomb explosion in 1914.

“It is extremely fragile. It has a complex layered structure, so the layers of gilding often peel off, and much of my job is to glue these layers of gilding back to ensure everything is in perfect order before the coronation,” Blesley said.

He has been working on the restoration of the chair for four months.
